Low health literacy is a barrier to effective health communication and contributes to health disparities and avoidable health outcomes.
National assessments of adult literacy have raised serious concerns about many people’s “health competence,” which involves one’s ability to access and use health information and services -
nearly half the adult population in the U.S have reduced health competence.

These efforts have been shown to not only increase the health competence of patients but improve national health outcomes and decrease health disparities. |
